Junior Theme Abstract & Reflection

My junior theme research paper questioned why Americans distrust mass media.  I found that because it is a broad question and that there are multiple perspectives to consider.  One might feel that the mass media has a liberal/conservative bias depending on the media outlet they refer to.  Another might recognize that mass media isn’t always very honest and that propaganda is often than not lying to them.  Despite these examples being adequate reasons for distrusting the media, it’s wise to consider all media outlets and to continuously inform oneself.  I chose to research this topic because it’s becoming increasingly prevalent that people don’t trust mass media and I was curious as to why they specifically don’t.
I wasn’t surprised by the different perspectives on why some distrust the mass media but I was stunned by the percent of Americans that do distrust.  My personal opinion has changed and for the better. I will keep an open mind and gather all the information I can from various media outlets to have a range of viewpoints.  I find my topic to be important because it is a dangerous narrative to believe that all media outlets are propaganda or “fake news.” I’d hope if someone read my research paper they’d get the gist and remember that it's smart to have an open mind.
